Hire A Handyman To Prepare Your Yard For Summer

Summer means having BBQs, hosting friends, getting outside, and enjoying your backyard to its fullest. Contact your local handyman to get your deck and home exterior ideal for summer hosting.

We offer a wide range of handyman services. Here they offer 4 tips to get your yard ready for summer.

Handyman Tips To Prepare Your Yard For Summer

Fix the deck

Decks are the perfect place to host parties and entertain friends during the warmer months. However, this can be hard if your deck has seen better days. If your deck is an eyesore or has lost structural integrity, your handyman in Conway SC can help.

Water causes parts of your deck to warp or rot over time. If the wood is soft, it’s time to replace it. Your handyman will remove the water-damaged boards and replace them with new wood. On the other hand, they may use a wood filler to repair the rot if the damage is minor and limited to one area.

Stain the deck

You should have your deck restained every three to four years with a high-quality sealant to protect it from the elements. With a lower quality stain, you will have to reapply every one to two years.

handyman-2-1.jpg?resize=300%2C200Deck staining helps reduce the chance of splintering and water damage. In fact, staining is crucial to your deck’s longevity! Plus, it keeps your deck looking great.

Staining isn’t an overly complicated process, but it is one that you want to do right. Otherwise, the stain may not take properly. In that case, it won’t protect your deck perfectly and won’t look perfect either! Fortunately, your handyman is an expert at staining decks.

Add a fire pit

If your area doesn’t allow wood-burning firepits, consider a propane burner! Propane fireplaces, fire tables, or fire pits can help you enjoy those long summer nights. We can help install your propane burner and ensure your fireplace area flows well with the rest of the yard.

Pressure wash

A professional pressure wash by your local handyman might be just the facelift that your yard needs! Pressure washing removes dirt, mold, algae, and anything else stuck to the exterior of your home. Not only does this improve your home’s curb appeal, but it also helps protect wood and masonry from grime buildup.

If you want to host any summer BBQs or gatherings, getting your home’s exterior pressure washed is a great idea. It gets your yard looking its best!

Doing your own pressure washing can be a real hassle. It’s time-consuming, and you’ll probably have to rent a pressure washer.

It makes more sense to simply hire a handyman to do the job for you! Call Handyman Conway now.

Handyman Tips To Safeguard Aging Parents

It’s the time of the year when we celebrate a special day for mothers and fathers.  This is the season to commemorate our parents and all they have actually provided for us over the years. Now it’s time to give back. Sure, greeting cards and beautiful flowers seem thoughtful, but as their generation begins to age, possibly the most welcome present of all will certainly be aiding senior moms and dads to preserve their independence. That includes hiring a handyman to make some home adjustments to suit their needs.

Here are seven helpful handyman tips to make sure your parents or grandparents will become safer and more comfortable in their own homes.

Work from the outdoors.  If you’ll supervise the improvement of your Mom and Dad’s front stairways this springtime, make sure there is an excellent and sturdy handrail in position. This will definitely minimize instances of slips and falls by adding tidy sand to the paint which will certainly be used on the staircase. It could even be the best time to hire a local handyman to change the stairway with a universal access ramp if you’re up for it.

Create a Smart home. Grandparents don’t need to become as tech-savvy as their millennial grand- or great-grandchildren. However, just a few Smart home functionality around the house can go a long way.  Some of these special smart home features can include personal emergency situation response systems, Smart buzzers that screen prospective visitors, and even a robot vacuum.

Get down to the basics. Be sure to take note or make a list of all the easy-to-fix security dangers in your parents’ home. This time, you can put your handyman abilities to work, or you can even hire a local professional Conway handyman to do it for you. For instance, you need to secure rugs and carpets (scatter) in place with non-slip tape or rubber shelf liners. You can also work on replacing non-functional locks on doors and windows. Next, aim at replacing worn-out electrical wiring.

handyman-2.jpg?resize=300%2C225Improving Room Lighting. Powerful lighting and task lights carefully situated near the work surface (like kitchen counters) can greatly benefit aging eyes. See to it that the ambient illumination is glare-free and also at a constant degree from one room to the following, to prevent eyestrain because of macular degeneration. Do so by hiring handyman services for the job.

Give attention to the bathroom. The location of the toilet and bathroom can be particularly hazardous for seniors. Mount grab bars in the shower stall and also beside the toilet. You can even purchase an elevated toilet seat with its own cushioned arms attached. A bathroom bench will make it easier, more comfortable, and safer for aging parents to get right into the bathtub and wash.

Keep in touch regularly. I have a mother and I am a mom myself. These 2 attributes make me especially certified to offer this item of recommendation: provide Mommy (and also Daddy) a telephone call regularly. Staying connected by means of Skype or FaceTime is not just friendly, it will likewise allow you to see exactly how well (or the contrary!) your mom and dad look.

Think about installing a home security system. If your folks are sickly or absent-minded, you will certainly be able to check their well-being with your smart device, even if you live hundreds of miles away. Make sure that they typically aren’t overlooking such important elements of health maintenance as taking essential medication and regular healthy meals, in addition to being educated of an emergency circumstance– for instance, autumn. Of course, you will have to talk about this choice with your parent beforehand to make certain that they are comfortable with it. Look for a reliable handyman in Conway SC who can help you out.

It’s never too late to make your parents safer and more secure with the help of Handyman Conway.

Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects

Now that the weather is warming up, you can finally spend some time outside again. Before the summer arrives, get the outside of your house ready for summer fun– swimming, parties, barbecues, and crawfish boils! Here is a list of outdoor spring cleaning projects that you can tackle on Saturday mornings to get your house looking great again.

Pressure Washing: Pressure washing the outside of your home can make it look new again. Take the pressure washer to your driveway, sidewalk, brick or siding, and even your wooden porch to freshen up your curb appeal.

Outdoor Furniture: Clean outdoor furniture cushions following the care instructions on the tag. For the rest of the furniture, fill a bucket with water and a few drops of dawn, use a big sponge to wash it down, then rinse with a hose.

Gutter Cleaning: Grab your ladder and get up there. Using a small plastic scoop or a glove, scoop out all the leaves and junk that has been collected in your gutters to prepare them for the coming summer rain! You can also hire a local handyman to do this for you.

Yard Cleanup: Just a general cleanup can make your yard look better. Cut the grass, trim the edges, rake or blow the leaves, pick up any straggling debris, patch any grass that is scarce, add stepping stones where they would be helpful, and any other small things you notice that need some attention.

Car: Clean your car INSIDE AND OUT. Take everything out of your car, and sort through it. Vacuum and wipe everything down. Then put away things that were out of place, throw away the trash, and organize what’s left back into the car. Then wash and wax the outside of your vehicle.

Facia: If you have access to a pressure washer, make sure to use it on your facia. If you do not have access to a pressure washer, you can wash it down with a hose or use a sponge mop with hot water and dawn to reach up there and get a better clean.

Porch Ceiling: Don’t forget to clean the ceiling of your porches. Some ceilings can be pressure washed. If your porch ceiling cannot be pressure washed, you can hose it down or wash it with a sponge mop.

Grill: Periodically cleaning your grill can extend the life of your grill. To clean your grill, preheat the grill for 15 minutes on high heat. Turn the grill off, then clean grates with a metal brush dipped in hot water or hot water with dish soap. This will help steam clean the grates. Dish soap will help with removing leftover grease. Alternatively, you can you a specialty grill cleaner.

Once the grill has cooled, wipe the grates with a damp cloth and remove them. It is important to clean the grates after each time you use your grill. Coat the grates with cooking oil to prevent grim from collecting during your next cooking. Once the grates are removed, remove the heat deflectors. You can clean the heat deflectors using the same metal brush and water or water with dish soap. Then remove the burners and clean them in the same manner.

Next clean out the cook box and the lid of the grill using the same method used to clean the rest of the grill. It is a good idea to place a bucket underneath the grill while you clean the cook box and lid. Lastly, take a stainless steel cleaner and clean the outside of the grill using a microfiber cloth. Place a cover over your grill to protect it from weather. If you’re storing your grill inside, make sure to leave the propane tanks outside away from sunlight.

Garden: Tend to your garden and freshen up your curb appeal! Replace any plants that need replacing, pull weeds, give your garden a good dose of fertilizer, and prune what you can. You can hire an expert handyman to help you out.

Replace mulch or dirt: Over time, the mulch or dirt in your garden can start to look funky. Take it out and replace it. Not only will this make your garden more appealing visually, but it will also help your plant life.

Garage: Sort through everything in your garage and get it organized! If necessary, buy some plastic bins or other organization tools so that everything will be easy to find. Sweep and wash the floors. Remove any cobwebs from the corners or ceiling.

Trim Trees: Trim any dead or broken branches from your trees and trim your hedges.

Garage door: I bet you didn’t think of this, did you? Cleaning your garage door is one of the most neglected tasks when it comes to cleaning the outside of your house. Not all garage doors can withstand a pressure wash. To be safe, wash down your garage door with a big sponge and some hot water with a little dish soap, then rinse it off.

Cobwebs: Remove any cobwebs from your porch or other outdoor areas where spiders tend to make their webs.
Trashcan: Lay your trash cans and recycle bins on their side and wash them down with a hose. If you’re up to it, put a big glove on and wash the can out with a big sponge and dawn. You may even consider building a trash can enclosure to hide the trash can and improve your home’s outdoor appearance.

Outdoor light fixtures: Clean your outdoor light fixtures and replace any burnt out bulbs.

Kids’ equipment: Wash down your kids’ outdoor playhouses, bikes, and other toys. You can do this using a safe cleaner or warm water with a little dish soap, then hose them down.

Pool: If you have a pool, get it ready for swimming because the weather is warming up! Sweep and shock it.
Fence: Check your fences for any areas that need to be fixed, replaced, or repainted. Make sure the locks and latches are working properly as well.

Double Door Mats: Your floors will stay cleaner if you have a doormat on both the outside and the inside of your front and back doors. Shake out or replace the mats you have, and sweep the surrounding areas. While you’re at it, check to see if your front door could use a fresh coat of paint!

Handyman Tips: Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

Homeowners are often inspired to revitalize and revive their living spaces by spring maintenance. This can lead to a rise in home maintenance jobs for handymen. There are many maintenance tasks, from clearing gutters to tuning up air conditioners.

If you are a handyman and own your own business, you might already be aware that customers don’t always know the extent of maintenance they need or the cost of costly repairs. It’s helpful to create a spring home maintenance checklist that you can share with customers in these situations.

We’ve put together a spring home maintenance checklist that you can’t miss. It includes home maintenance tips and a checklist for the roof, basement, and everything in between.

Home Maintenance Tasks For A Handyman

#1: Inspect the roof and make home repairs

Even the strongest roofs can be damaged by snow, ice and strong winds from a winter storm. Even hotter weather can cause roof foundation damage. Even if the customer doesn’t suffer any severe damage, it is possible for big problems to develop even when there aren’t obvious signs. It is important to check your customers’ roofs, and repair any winter damage. This will save you time and money.

Be sure to inspect the roofs of your customers when you examine them.

Roof damage can also be indicated by missing, curled, cracked or damaged shingles. They can also lead to leaks and pooling, which could cause costly water damage.

Plumbing vent pipes – After enduring a long winter, pipes may need some TLC. You should inspect for damage such as bent or missing pipes.

The attic – Although technically it refers to the interior of your house, we are putting it in the roofing category as it is so important. Check your attic for signs of water damage or mildew when spring arrives.

Spring is the best time for major repairs. Jack Cottrell, Colorado roofing company Jack the Roofer, states that spring is the best time for homeowners to review their finances and file their tax returns. This allows them to get their tax refunds which makes it easier to finance home improvements.

#2: Make sure you have clean gutters and downspouts

It’s worth checking out the gutters and downspouts of your customers while you are inspecting their roof. Gutter and downspouts get clogged up in the winter and fall. However, the spring rains will clear them so that water flows freely away from the house and not into it.

Clearing gutters and downspouts: Remove any dead leaves, branches or twigs that could be clogging gutters and drains. You should first take out the most substantial debris using a scoop. To flush your gutters, you can then use a gardenhose.

Repairing and checking for seasonal damage. Gutters and downspouts can take a lot of abuse during winter. Make sure to check for any areas that are sagging or broken. This can cause wood eaves and trims to rot which can lead to infestations and leaks. Also, look out for missing or damaged sections.

#3: Inspect exterior paint and/or siding

A thorough inspection of exterior paint and siding should be part of your spring home maintenance checklist. Exterior paint can wear over time. If you see areas of peeling, cracking or chipping, it may be time to recommend spring painting services.

You might also suggest replacing, cleaning up, or repairing any siding that is cracked, loose, warped or rotted.

#4: Examine the exterior of your windows

Two things are essential when assessing the windows of customers for spring. The first is to make sure that the screens keep bugs out during cool spring evenings, when customers want their windows open. Also, make sure that the windows are energy efficient enough to allow cool air through on hot summer days.

Also, make sure to:

  • Inspect the screens for tears, rips or other damage.
  • Inspect casings, shutters, and jambs for damage or missing components.
  • Make sure to clean the windows

#5: Check outdoor decks

Anyone with wooden patios, decks, pergolas, or balconies should make sure to inspect them as part of their spring home maintenance checklist. Winter can be particularly harsh on wood elements, so make sure you check the following:

  • Wood can be rotted, peeled, or warped.
  • If applicable, peeling or chipping paint

You may be able to power wash the decks of your customers. This will allow you to remove any winter grime and dirt. If a deep clean is not enough, repainting and resealing may be required. Talk to your customer about the best maintenance for long-term results. Customers are often not sure what maintenance options are available. They will seek your advice and offer specific services.

#6: Make sure you check concrete areas

Winter can cause damage to woodwork, but concrete is just as susceptible. It is important for handymen to verify that hardscaping elements such as walkways, driveways, and other paths are strong enough to withstand winter.

Cracking is the most obvious sign of winter abuse to concrete and asphalt. You can usually repair small cracks with some caulking. However, larger cracks or holes might need to be replaced.

Your customer may not think cracks in their driveways or walkways are important, but the truth is that curb appeal can be affected by the condition of the concrete exterior of a home.

#7: Keep your lawns mowed

Your customers’ yards may be in bad shape after the winter storms and snowfall that have occurred. This is the time to get them back in order.

You might offer your customers services such as yard sprucing, such:

Clearing out debris – Winter storms may cause fallen tree limbs or branches to fall. Also, inspect the trees for any broken or dead branches. This could pose a safety hazard.

Make sure to inspect their irrigation systems and sprinkler heads. Sprinkler heads can get clogged with dirt and twigs, which can prevent them from working properly. Make sure to clean them thoroughly and then test that they are working. Leaks, low water pressure, or any other problem should be addressed as soon as possible.

Basic landscaping – You might start springtime chores such as cutting the grass, planting flowers, or mulching to prepare customers’ lawns for summer. To help with larger projects, you can collaborate with other local landscapers.

#8: Renovate and repair the interior of your home

While the exterior of a home is what bears the brunt winter’s harshness, the interior of the home should be taken care of when you provide spring home maintenance to your customers.

You can assist with a variety of indoor issues, including:

You should check the basement for moisture. It is important to inspect your customers basements for signs such as mold, mildew, or moisture. You should also check their crawlspace for leaks due to melting snow.

Inspection of the windows & doors – Now that you have checked the outsides of the windows & doors, it is time to inspect the insides. You need to inspect the inside of the windows and doors for damage or malfunction. You should caulk any openings that might have occurred during winter.

Air conditioning units should be checked – It may take a while before your customers use their A/C units. However, you should still offer to inspect them. If repairs or replacements are needed, this will allow you to do so before summer’s peak.

Safety detectors should be inspected – It is recommended that safety detectors in your home are replaced at least once per year. Spring is a great time to do this. This task can be added to your home maintenance list, giving your customers even more peace of mind.
